Interesting stories by Faculty while working in Machines' lab with students

The students who followed the instructions and could do experiments gave us a satisfaction of teaching. However, the students who made mistakes and could not do it in the first attempt have TAUGHT us what should be improved while teaching. Thanks to all those students

Working in Machines Lab (MC Lab), especially conducting experiments with students (some really curious, enthusiastic, and thrilled while some really hate it but forced to participate as a part of curriculum ) is actually a learning for us as a subject teacher. Rather, we learnt many things when these young students ask simple but thoughtful questions which otherwise we take it for granted. The development of AVMC actually started because of such students who used to ask questions and we have to think how to make them understand in a better way.

E.g. Why armature rheostat should be at maximum while starting DC motor or why induction motor should be started keeping that typical rheostat or autotransformer position.

The "Diwali fire work with a louder noise" actually seen and experienced in the lab and how their friends ran away from the table, that burnt fuse smell, and lot of observers gathered around the table "to see, what happened?? how??, and especially WHO did it??" will never make them forget the severity and importance of these concepts which cannot be achieved in just class teaching of theory with equations on black board to explain the high starting current.

Fortunately, we never had any fatal or serious accidents in Lab (Thanks to Mayekar who always remained a keen but strict care-taker for our students (more like children as we call them "Bachhe or mule" in our local Hindi or Marathi language). Maykar's contribution in MC Lab development is unaccountable, who has been working in Lab for more than 20 years. His unfulfilled desire of having formal education in engineering, he tried to fulfill by his passionate learning in Machines lab where he attend all Machines labs, all semester, conducting all experiments himself under our supervision and then with students also. A passionate learner and Machine lover in true sense.
